Rugged Microphone

DSC (Digital Selective Calling)
The Atlantis 275 floats and is rated submersible to 4.9 feet for 30 minutes. Furthermore, it comes equipped with a tone to clear water from the speaker cavity when the radio has been submerged, meaning this radio will be ready when you need it the most.
S.A.M.E. Weather Alert (Specific Area Message Encoding)
Receives all Weather channels and Alerts. Comes with an emergency strobe light and built-in flashlight for emergency situations.

Hand piece mount bracket is produced very poorly
This is the second unit that I have ordered and wanted to return. The first unit had the hand-piece and the little ring that you hook onto the mount was broken off. You can see that they have an issue with their plastic mold as you can see it’s not smooth and shows signs of weekeness. I returned it and got another one and installed it and within 2 minutes the same thing had broken off. I had the same unit for 15 years without a problem so it shows these are made very poorly these days. Now I can’t return this as it’s past the expiry as I didn’t use the boat for 2 weeks and I have a radio that now the hand piece cannot be hooked onto the mount. Very disappointing. This is the FIRST EVER negative review I have ever written about anything.

Not sturdy
Mic broke within 2 weeks of using this unit. I had used an older Uniden unit for years using the same Mic mount without issue. I hit a few waves and the mic mount piece snapped off. I’ve reached out to support and they haven’t answer after 1 week+ of waiting. Poor customer service and very cheap parts, avoid at all costs.

Compact easy to read
This is a marine VHF radio which I have installed in my boat. It works very well and it of a size that fits almost anywhere for installation . It arrived on time and was very well packaged . I have only had this item 2 weeks and so far the reception and sending is excellent. I recommend this product based on the time frame I have operated it.

Would not purchase again.

A piece of CRAP
Uniden hand held VHF is the WORST company to deal with…..period!!My four month old hand held boat radio fell on the floor and the lidthat closes the battery broke. I sent it back to Uniden repairs. Aftera month of not hearing from them I called customer service. They saidit would cost 79 dollars for the repair. That’s fifty percent of what I paidfor the radio. I told them they had the radio, could check the serial numberto see it was a current model and stand by their warranty.I told the woman that was ridiculous to pay that amount for a radio less than a yearold for repair. They will never get my business again.

Not happy with product after being professionally installed.
Bought the item end of May 2019 and had the vhf radio professionally installed spending a lot of money to make sure it was done correctly. Looked good and worked well for about two months. Then it stopped working, seemed only to get static and the squelch didn’t work either. When offshore you don’t expect problems with your main safety net especially one that’s been installed by a professional and is new! At least you expect a year out of a product! Not happy and no warranty by the looks of it!

2nd unit also defective
Poor manufacturing. Before I even had a chance to Install it the handheld clip fell apart. Looks like it was held together with glue.Update: I started a return and replaced with exact same unit 2 days later, model UM435BK, same exact problem. The button on the back of the handheld broke before I could even install it on the boat. Returning both units for a refund. Do yourself a favor and pay a little more for a quality unit. Manufacturing is seriously lacking.

Disappointment
Purchased this marine radio for our brand-new boat and got to use it 2 times before the microphone holder broke. Went to the maker’s website and purchased a new piece for the microphone only to realize that once I tried to install the piece, the screws that it attached to would keep snapping. Now I have no way to hang up my Microphone and will probably have to get a new one.

Scan Feature didnt work
I cant return this item because it took 6 months to get things installed on my boat only to find out that the scan feature didnt work and the clip on the handheld microphone broke off as well. I had to completel replace this item and purchased a cobra.

Box photo is wrong!
Box photo is wrong (or out of date). Box photo (& other product photos) show radio has back lit buttons (so you can see them in the dark), but actual radio buttons are just white painted letters. Not a deal breaker since radio seems ok for the price (I’ve used Uniden radios for years) and it was relatively easy to connect to my Garmin chartplotter (which isn’t always the case).But if the box show back lit buttons, you expect the radio to have them too!!

Affordable nice looking radio, but…
On the plus side the unit looks good, is affordable, and feels very rugged. And it certainly worked out of the box.I have a few cons, as follows:1) Unit powers up to the last channel used, as mentioned in the manual. It should always power up to channel 16 for emergency turn on.2) Changing channels is difficult. The unit switches over to a channel list using very small font that require the use of reading glasses. It should continue to use a large font channel number somewhere on the display to help folks that don’t have good vision up close.3) Little to no trouble shooting information. i.e. In case of difficulty.In an earlier version of my review I mentioned that I was having difficulty connecting an inexpensive GPS receiver to the UM435. I was finally able to connect a BN-880 GPS TX output to the UM435 using a TTL to RS422 convertor module. The GPS provides the UM435 with distress call position information. The RS422 convertor module was purchased on Amazon. “LM YN RS422 to TTL Mutual Conversion Module Bi-Directional Signal Module Full-Duplex 422 to Single-chip microcomputer MAX490 to TTL Module”. The GPS was from elsewhere, but can be purchased on Amazon.

Low end transceiver does the job
We previously had a more robust and fully featured Uniden radio; we went through two of them as the first one failed some years after installation.We had a WHAM which manual declared worked with the newer UNIDEN VHF models; it still works, and I rather wanted that feature.We got very spoiled with our prior radio, which had a much more effective interface in the mike (and not coincidentally, had a speaker in it so that in noisy conditions – frequently found aboard – I could hold the mike next to my ear and hear the transmission clearly), as well as other features not found in this bargain basement model.That said, it works like it’s supposed to, and transmits and receives reliably using the same antenna as was present for the prior radio.If a replacement had been available for the original, I’d have bought it. But I bought this one due to my prior satisfaction with Uniden hardware.It was not a plug-and-play for our installation, as the previous radio was taller than this, but it did fit into the prior flush-mount hole snugly on the sides, and the mounting hardware worked in the same manner.A good bargain buy. But if you’re going to be using it actively (often during the day) you will probably want a more fully featured radio.
