Good product – a few drawbacks
Fine radio- advanced functionality. Operation not intuitive- a bit clunky to use. Not as ruggedly built as my last Icom radio, but still better than the competition. Battery compartment doesn’t seem as well protected from water intrusion, but I won’t know for sure until I put it to the test. GPS doesn’t work well unless there are no obstructions at all above it. My phone GPS works better in that respect.

Important Omission in Description…
This might be a great radio. And if it is I will update my rating. But nowhere in the description does it say that in order to use the radio you have to obtain an MMSI number. Maybe that is common knowledge to some folks, but not to me. In order to get the number, you either have to have a Boat US membership or pay a $25 fee (and for that you get the number and a 1-year membership to BoatUS, so not a bad deal). But this information should have been included in the item description.

Bought as a gift and appears well made but large.
A gift for Christmas so I can’t really give a review. But from the person receiving I would say very good.

Disappointing AIS performance
I’ve used the M94D on two 400 mile deliveries. The AIS is disappointing, because it seems to be unable to parse out the vessels names, and this negates on of the big advantages of AIS. Several times I would be within 5 miles of a ship with a Class A transponder for more than 20 minutes and all it would display is the MMSI. I know it was receiving the packet with the ship’s name, because it would display ship dimensions which are in the same packet. My other beef is that the unit cannot be used while it is being charged, and it only has a battery life of 9 hours. Thus it is not possible to use it for collision avoidance 24/7. I asked ICOM USA about that, and they said that wasn’t its purpose, and I should get a built in AIS system

When you need a quality backup VHF look no further
This radio fits the bill for my use, I have a 25′ center console that lives its life on the Florida east coast, after taking the boat to Bimini Bahamas and being disappointed with my Cobra VHF, I was introduced to ICOM. Let me tell you the quality of the build and clarity of the sound are not even comparable to the Cobra. This is hands down a quality unit. One of the things that made me hesitant to purchase this radio was one of the other reviewers mentioned that the radio would not operate when connected to the charger and plugged into power (charging) this is not the case with my radio. I live about 600′ from a draw bridge and can leave this radio on its charger listening to CH13 24/7. Why you ask? Because that determines when I leave my house as to not get caught up in traffic haha. Anyhow, great radio, easy to program the MMSI too!

Easy to use and powerful
This radio works well. The AIS is easy to use. It is thick, almost twice the thickness of normal vhf radios. Not something you want to carry in your pocket.
